GP or emergency room? How to decide when you feel unwell

When you feel unwell, it can be hard to know whether to book a GP appointment or go to an emergency room. This guide gives general pointers. If you are ever unsure and the problem seems serious, treat it as an emergency.

A GP can help with

  • Coughs, colds, sore throats and flu-like illness
  • Ear pain and sinus problems
  • Urinary symptoms
  • Skin rashes and minor infections
  • Minor cuts and injuries
  • Vomiting or diarrhoea that is mild and improving
  • Repeat prescriptions and chronic condition reviews
  • Medical certificates and general check-ups

Call 112 or 10177 or go to an emergency room for

  • Chest pain or pressure, especially with sweating, nausea or pain spreading to the arm or jaw
  • Severe difficulty breathing
  • Signs of a stroke: a drooping face, weakness in an arm or leg, or difficulty speaking
  • Heavy bleeding that does not stop with pressure
  • A seizure, or loss of consciousness
  • Swelling of the face, lips or throat, or a severe allergic reaction
  • A serious injury, such as a suspected broken bone with severe pain or deformity, or a head injury with drowsiness or vomiting
  • Suspected poisoning or an overdose

From a cell phone you can call 112. In South Africa the ambulance number is 10177.

If you are not sure

Phone your GP's rooms and describe what is happening. If it sounds urgent, you will be told to seek emergency care. If you cannot reach anyone and you are worried, go to an emergency room. Do not wait to see if serious symptoms pass.
