Sleep concerns assessed by a GP
Dr Omar has an interest in sleep medicine as part of his general practice. A GP is a good first stop for sleep problems because a thorough assessment can show whether the cause is lifestyle, a medical condition or a medicine.
Common sleep concerns
- Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep (insomnia)
- Loud snoring, or pauses in breathing noticed by a partner
- Feeling very sleepy during the day
- Waking unrefreshed or with morning headaches
- Sleep that is disrupted by shift work or irregular routines
What the assessment involves
- A history of your sleep pattern, habits, caffeine and alcohol use, medicines, mood and general health.
- An examination, including blood pressure and weight.
- Simple tests where indicated.
- A plan, which may include sleep habits, treatment of an underlying cause or referral for a sleep study or specialist opinion.
Frequently asked questions
Do you do sleep studies?
A sleep study is done at a specialised facility. Dr Omar can assess whether a sleep study or specialist referral is appropriate for you.
Can poor sleep be a sign of another condition?
Yes. Sleep problems can be linked to conditions such as anxiety, low mood, breathing problems, pain and some medicines. A consultation looks at the whole picture.
When should I get help urgently?
See a doctor promptly if you fall asleep while driving or at work, or if someone has seen you stop breathing during sleep. In an emergency call 112 or 10177.
